Abstract

This study investigates key aspects of customer service optimization within retail environments. An algorithm was developed and implemented to construct a discrete-event simulation model of a supermarket checkout system, enabling the analysis of various queue organization configurations. The model facilitates comparative evaluation of their operational efficiency based on predefined performance criteria. Furthermore, a dynamic checkout management algorithm was designed and programmed to adjust the number of active service counters in real time. This mechanism responds adaptively to the current customer arrival rate and queue lengths, with the objective of minimizing customer waiting time and balancing cashier workload. The simulation model enables the assessment of critical performance indicators, including average customer waiting time, queue length, checkout utilization rate, the number of customers who abandon the queue before being served, and the total number of customers processed. The results of the simulation provide a robust analytical basis for informed decision-making regarding the optimal number and types of checkout counters, workforce management strategies, and improvements in customer experience.
