Abstract

In the third decade of the twenty-first century, urban planning increasingly focuses on making cities more pedestrian-friendly. This shift demands the reduction of private car use in central zones and the implementation of restrictions that render walking a viable everyday transport choice. Properly designed pedestrian routes – safe, high-quality, and well-connected to public transport nodes – are fundamental to many modern urban theories. This paper identifies current policies, methods, and ICT tools used to promote active pedestrian transport in selected European cities. We present spatial, urbanistic, and architectural solutions that encourage city dwellers to choose walking as a sustainable mode of transport.
