Abstract

This article outlines the development history and technology of propfans, which are innovative aircraft engines that combine the characteristics of turboprop and turbofan engines. It outlines the project's origins and its impact on advances in materials, aerodynamics, and noise reduction. It also discusses ongoing research that suggests this technology could make a comeback in the context of sustainable aviation.
