Abstract
The article presents the concept and modes of measurement of biological diversity as well as its significance as an indicator of sustainable development and ecodevelopment. Estimation of biodiversity can be carried out on various levels of organization of nature. The majority of currently used indicators are linked to species and ecosystem (landscape) diversity. It has been established that indicators concerning the state of the natural environment are of great importance for evaluation of fulfilment of the assumptions of sustainable development, for which the important goal should be the restriction of the rate of species extinction on Earth.
