Abstrakt
W wielu dziedzinach rządy mają monopol na wspieranie badań naukowych. Idealnie wspierają naukę, ponieważ wierzą, że obiektywne badania są cenne. Niestety, jak przewidywał Eisenhower w swoim pożegnalnym przemówieniu z 17 stycznia 1961 r. (tym, które ostrzegało również przed kompleksem wojskowo-przemysłowym): Częściowo z powodu ogromnych kosztów kontrakt rządowy staje się praktycznie substytutem intelektualnej ciekawości. W tych okolicznościach, gdy rząd chce określonego wyniku naukowego, idealne rozwiązanie jest zagrożone. Jednak, jak mam nadzieję pokazać, problem nie leży po prostu w uprzedzeniach. Raczej władza wymyśla narrację niezależnie od poglądów nawet współpracujących naukowców. W tym sensie nauka staje się nieistotna.
