Abstract

Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems play an increasingly important role in decarbonising housing, yet studies on their integration in residential buildings are widely spread across many disciplines. This paper presents a bibliometric review of 1485 Scopus-indexed publications (2010–July 2026) on PV systems in residential buildings. Bibliometrix/Biblioshiny, VOSviewer, and Excel are used to analyse publication and citation trends, the most active journals, authors, institutions and countries; and to map keyword co-occurrence and collaboration networks. The results show a rapidly growing and strongly interdisciplinary field, which is dominated by energy and engineering perspectives. It is also concentrated in a relatively small group of sources and research groups, mainly in North America, Europe, Australia and parts of Asia. Keywords show strong attention to PV technology, energy efficiency, system performance and nearly zero-energy housing, while architectural and urban design themes and social or behavioural aspects are less represented. The review identifies three main gaps: design-oriented work, social and behavioural studies, and research on specific housing types and regions. It also points to future research directions that can support PV-ready residential architecture and neighbourhood planning.

Keywords:

solar photovoltaics, residential buildings, PV integration, bibliometric analysis, energy-efficient architecture
