Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań nad strefami ogólnymi w dużych europejskich szpitalach wielospecjalistycznych. Do badań wybrano kilkanaście szpitali stanowiących flagowe przykłady współczesnych dużych szpitali. W badaniu skupiono się na strefach wewnętrznych, w szczególności na reprezentacyjnej strefie wejściowej
z główną komunikacją szpitala pełniącą funkcję ogólnodostępnej przestrzeni publicznej oferującej szereg usług, będącej obszarem komunikacji, oczekiwania oraz spotkań. Celem badań było określenie tendencji projektowych w kontekście lokalizacji i form stref ogólnych, ich cech charakterystycznych oraz ich udziału na tle innych stref w szpitalach, rozwiązań architektonicznych oraz funkcjonalno-przestrzennych. Zbadano zależności pomiędzy kształtem szpitala a formą jego wewnętrznych przestrzeni ogólnych oraz ich udziałem procentowym na tle całkowitej powierzchni budynku. Zwrócono również uwagę na aspekty obecności sztuki i zieleni w badanych strefach, udziału światła naturalnego, stosowanej kolorystyki, a także na rodzaj materiałów wykończeniowych stosowanych współcześnie w tego typu przestrzeniach. Przeprowadzone badania wykazały widoczne różnice w formie stref ogólnych dużych szpitali w porównaniu z kształtem szpitali w XX wieku. Poza formą zmienił się także sposób aranżacji tychże stref, które często nie przypominają przestrzeni szpitala. Coraz większą rolę w nich odgrywa sztuka oraz zieleń. Strefa ta stanowi ważny węzeł komunikacyjny szpitala stanowiący główną przestrzeń publiczną wzmagającą kontakty i relacje międzyludzkie.
