Artykuł przedstawia aktualny stan wiedzy o świątyni Borobudur, wyjątkowo cennym przykładzie architektury buddyjskiej zlokalizowanej na wyspie Jawa w Indonezji. Autorka analizuje genezę powstania świątyni, fakty z jej ponownego odkrycia po wiekach zapomnienia. Analizuje również buddyjską kosmologię ucieleśnioną w formie trójwymiarowej mandali na bazie której powstała forma architektoniczna Borobudur. Autorka bada buddyjską symbolikę formy architektonicznej, płaskorzeźb i rzeźb stworzonych na bazie regionalnych wzorców i lokalnej jawajskiej kultury życia codziennego. Świątynia ta jest jednym z najdoskonalszych przykładów przełożenia buddyjskiej kosmologii i symboliki w formę architektoniczną. Stanowi równocześnie ponad kulturowe i ponadczasowe arcydzieło architektury i rzeźby, wymagające szczególnej ochrony, również ze względu na wpływ jaki wywiera na życie lokalnych buddyjskich mniejszości religijnych.
