Abstract

The cultural landscape of Nałęczów, a town-garden, mainly brings to one’s mind Uzdrowisko (Spa), the 200-year development and architecture of which boasts a splendid choice of outstanding 18th–20th century architects. Jan Ferynand Nax, the designer of Małachowski Family’s early classicist palace in Park Zdrojowy. Karol Kozłowski, the designer of the spa buildings and the reconstruction of Małachowski Family’s palace. Walerian Kronenberg, the author of the reconstruction of Park Zdrojowy. Adam Nagórski and Michał Górski, the precursors of the Swiss chalet style in guesthouse construction in Nałęczów. And probably the most recognizable figure, Jan Koszyc Witkiewicz, who implemented the Zakopane style in Uzdrowisko together with Zenon Chrzanowski. Witkiewicz is also the founder of Szkoła Rzemiosł Budowlanych (Building Crafts School) in Nałęczów, later moved to Kazimierz Dolny on the Vistula river. In the shadow of those achievements, small wooden house construction was developing as self-proclaimed architects built their own houses – today described as wooden vernacular architecture. The local architecture has been shaped by a centuries-long tradition where the influence of the Uzdrowisko architects of 18th and 20th centuries, especially Jan Koszyc Witkiewicz’s school, is clearly.
